DFG CLOSES FISHING IN LONG BEACH HARBOR
LONG BEACH - The Department of Fish and Game (DFG) closed fishing in the harbor area where an oil spill occurred on Nov. 7. The closure is effective immediately and includes no take of finfish or shellfish from either shorelines or boats in the designated area.
The closure area extends from the south bend of the Middle Breakwater north to Pier J, east along the shoreline of Pier J the sound to east end of the Long Beach Breakwater (about 2.75 miles into the bay). The closure and map are available at: http://nrm.dfg.ca.gov/FileHandler.ashx?DocumentID=24608
The Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) recommended closure until an investigation has determined the degree and nature of the public health threat posed by the oil spill.
The oil spill occurred during bunkering operations (taking on fuel) of the Da Tang 18. The cause is under investigation.
DFG activated the Oiled Wildlife Care Network (OWCN) to manage wildlife rescue operations if needed. Anyone seeing oiled wildlife should call 1-877-UCD-OWCN (1-877-823-6926).
