A meeting of the Carcinogen Identification Committee (CIC) was held on December 17, 2002, at the California Environmental Protection Agency Headquarters Building in Sacramento, California. Below are the presentations made by staff of California Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA). The segments of the agenda covered by this material include the “Consideration of a Chemical Known to the State to Cause Cancer,” “Consideration of Chemicals, Listed Via the State’s Qualified Experts Mechanism, For Removal From the List,” and “Consideration of Request to Review Statin Drugs as a Group for Subsequent Listing Consideration.”
The CIC determined that phenelzine and its acid salts had not been clearly shown to cause cancer; and therefore, phenelzine and its acid salts are not added to the Proposition 65 chemical list. The CIC requested OEHHA to recommend to the National Toxicology Program that phenelzine salts be tested by the Program in long-term carcinogenesis bioassays. The CIC also determined that sodium saccharin, in light of new, relevant information, had not been clearly shown to cause cancer and should not remain on the Proposition 65 chemical list. Sodium saccharin will be removed from the Proposition 65 chemical list. In consideration of the request to review statin drugs as a group for subsequent listing consideration, the CIC recommended that OEHHA prepare individual hazard identification documents as resources are available on each of statin drugs and present them to the CIC at a future meeting. The CIC at that time would consider each of the statin drugs individually for possible listing. Related to the discussion surrounding statin drugs, the CIC expressed dissatisfaction with the present random selection aspect of the prioritization process. The CIC asked OEHHA to provide a proposal at a future CIC meeting for revisiting the current prioritization process and to bring together a subcommittee to discuss possible revisions.
