Cumulative Impacts and Precautionary Approaches Work Group: Announcement of Work Group Members
[01/29/08]
The Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) and California Integrated Waste Management Board are pleased to announce the formation of the Cumulative Impacts and Precautionary Approaches (CIPA) Work Group. The Work Group members that have been selected subsequent to the Call for Applications are identified below.
The California Environmental Protection Agency has adopted working definitions for both cumulative impacts and precautionary approaches. These definitions serve to provide direction as the Work Group advises Cal/EPA on the development of frameworks to assess cumulative impacts and implement precautionary approaches. This work is being done to further the aims of environmental justice in accordance with the Cal/EPA Environmental Justice Action Plan and Strategy.
Cal/EPA, through OEHHA and the Board, is developing a framework for assessing cumulative impacts, evaluating methods for these assessments, and making recommendations on how cumulative impact analysis may be implemented in the current regulatory and policy structure. It is also identifying reasonable cost-effective precautionary approaches to prevent or minimize adverse environmental impacts, and developing proposals in relation to policy, regulatory, and statutory changes. The Work Group helps to bring the needed stakeholder input into the process. The Work Group is comprised of individuals from industry, academia, environmental and community groups, and non-Cal/EPA governmental bodies. Because cumulative impacts and precautionary approaches are areas that overlap conceptually, one Work Group has been formed to advise work in this area. This will ensure that both cumulative impacts and precautionary approaches are addressed in a coordinated manner.
CIPA Work Group Meetings
Four to six public CIPA Work Group meetings will be held between Spring 2008 and Summer 2009. Meetings will be noticed at least 10 days prior to the scheduled meeting date.
