Cal/Ecotox Database

The California Wildlife Biology, Exposure Factor, and Toxicity Database (Cal/Ecotox) is a compilation of physiological and ecological parameters and toxicity data for a number of California fish and wildlife.

Toxicity Data Report Descriptions

For each chemical (first column on the left), a series of endpoint information is presented in the next four columns. These fields are the:

  • Tox Exposure:  the value(s) indicating the degree of exposure and units of exposure

  • Endpoint Type:  the general type of toxicological endpoint

  • Endpoint Description:  specific description of the endpoint value and how it was evaluated or measured

  • Endpoint Value:  the numerical or textual value associated with the endpoint type. Accumulation data are reported as tissue residue concentrations. Toxicological effects data may be reported in a variety of formats. If effects are significant (as indicted by citation authors), the effects values are expressed relative to control values (e.g., % change from control, decrease @ dose value). If effects are not significant, the endpoint value is listed as No effect. Benchmark dose values are entered as a dose. The term, "see citation," indicates that endpoint values are presented in a figure. "Review" indicates the citation is a secondary source that contains a collection of endpoint values.

The lettered Note contains the remaining description, remarks and additional information for the dataset. Some of these fields may be blank for a particular dataset and will not appear in the Note. The order of information in the Note are as follows:

  1. Life Cycle Stage: stage of the animal at the time data were collected
  2. Location, County: general study location displayed as California county
  3. Location, Lab: general study location displayed as laboratory
  4. Location, State/Country: general study location displayed as a state or country
  5. Sex: sex of the animals for which data were collected
  6. Species Name (Species-California): genus and species name
  7. Chemical Name (TOX Chemical): Chemical Abstracts Service Registry Number
  8. Dose-Response Data Format (Tox Dose-Response Data Format): format of dose-response data in citation
  9. Sample Size (N): the number of animals from which data were collected
  10. Age-Specific (Age): the age of the animal at the time data were collected
  11. Condition (Condition): modifying factors that may influence the exposure factor such as activity, breeding or feeding status
  12. Season/Month: time of year in which data were collected;
  13. Location-Specific: for field studies, the location where the data were collected
  14. Exposure Technique (Tox Exp Tech): method or route(s) by which study animals were exposed
  15. Exposure Duration (Tox Exp Dur): amount of time over which study animals were exposed to chemicals
  16. Study Duration (Tox Study Dur): inclusive of exposure duration and post-exposure time over which animals were observed
  17. Statistical Significance (Tox Stat Sig): denotes whether change in endpoint was statistically different from control
  18. Remarks general comments about the dataset.
