The California Environmental Protection Agencys Office of
Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) is the lead agency
for the implementation of the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement
Act of 1986 (Proposition 65).
The Carcinogen Identification Committee of OEHHAs Science
Advisory Board identifies chemicals for addition to the list of
chemicals known to the State to cause cancer, which is mandated
by Health and Safety Code Section 25249.8.
The Committee serves as the States qualified experts for rendering
an opinion whether a chemical has been clearly shown, through scientifically
valid testing according to generally accepted principles, to cause
cancer.
The Committee has developed draft criteria for identifying chemicals
for listing as known to the state to cause cancer and on
September 3, 1999, OEHHA made the draft criteria available for
distribution. The criteria were the subject of an agenda item at
the October 7, 1999 meeting of the Carcinogen Identification Committee.
The Committee received requests to extend the opportunity to provide
public comment on the draft criteria. The Chairman has extended
the public comment period to Tuesday, November 2, 1999, (60 days
from the original release of the document).
One original set and seven copies of the comments should be sent
by mail, fax, or delivered in person or courier to:

Upon receipt of comments, OEHHA will index and organize the comments
and forward copies to the members of the Committee for their review
and consideration. A future public notice will be published announcing
the date at which the Committee will meet to make a decision regarding
the criteria.
